இந்திய பத்திரிகை வரலாற்றில் சென்னை பத்திரிகையாளர் மன்றம் ஒரு சிறப்புமிக்க இடத்தைப் பிடித்துள்ளது. தமிழ்நாட்டின் மிகப் பழமையான பத்திரிகையாளர் மன்றமாக செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது.

இந்த கிளப் தன் முறையான பயணத்தை மே 2, 1972 அன்று தொடங்கியது, அப்போது அது மெட்ராஸ் பத்திரிகையாளர் மன்றமாகத் திறக்கப்பட்டது. இந்த நிகழ்வை அப்போதைய ஆளுநர் கே.கே. ஷா தலைமை தாங்கினார், பின்னர் அப்போதைய முதல்வர் எம். கருணாநிதி முறையாகத் திறந்து வைத்தார். கிளப்பின் முதல் நிர்வாகிகள் குழு அந்தக் காலத்தின் துடிப்பான பத்திரிகை உணர்வைப் பிரதிபலித்தது: முரசொலி மாறன், பின்னர் மத்திய அமைச்சரானார், முதல் தலைவராகப் பணியாற்றினார். எஸ். வாசுதேவன் முதல் பொதுச் செயலாளராக இருந்தார், அதே நேரத்தில் எம்.பி. செரியன் மற்றும் எஸ். விஸ்வநாதன் முறையே இணைச் செயலாளராகவும் பொருளாளராகவும் பணியாற்றினர்.

அதைத் தொடர்ந்து வந்த பத்தாண்டுகளில், பத்திரிகையாளர் மன்றம் ஒரு துடிப்பான நிறுவனமாக உருவெடுத்தது, தி இந்து, தி இந்தியன் எக்ஸ்பிரஸ், தி மெயில், தி ஸ்டேட்ஸ்மேன், மக்கள் குரல், தினமணி, தினமலர் மற்றும் தொழில்துறை பொருளாதார நிபுணர் போன்ற முன்னணி வெளியீடுகளின் பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் அலுவலகப் பொறுப்பாளர்களாகப் பணியாற்றினர். குறிப்பாக, தி ஸ்டேட்ஸ்மேனில் இருந்து பின்னர் ஓய்வு பெற்ற மூத்த பத்திரிகையாளர் சாம் ராஜப்பா, அதன் புகழ்பெற்ற தலைவர்களில் ஒருவர். 1980 ஆம் ஆண்டில், ஹேமலதா ஆஞ்சநேயலு கிளப்பின் முதல் பெண் தலைவர் ஆவார்.

பல ஆண்டுகளாக கிளப் ஏராளமான புகழ்பெற்ற ஆளுமைகளை வரவேற்றுள்ளது. முன்னாள் ஜனாதிபதி ஏ.பி.ஜே. அப்துல் கலாம் தற்போதைய கட்டிடத்தை ஏப்ரல் 14, 2009 அன்று திறந்து வைத்தார்.

சென்னை பத்திரிகையாளர் மன்றம் பத்திரிகை சுதந்திரத்தின் தீவிர பாதுகாவலராக இருந்து வருகிறது. ஜூன் 1983 இல், தமிழ்நாடு பத்திரிகைச் சட்டத்திற்கு எதிராக ஒரு பெரிய போராட்டத்தை முன்னெடுத்தது.

ஆகஸ்ட் 27, 1997 அன்று, இந்த கிளப் மறுபெயரிடப்பட்டு, அதன் வளர்ந்து வரும் அடையாளத்தை பிரதிபலிக்கும் வகையில், சென்னை பத்திரிகையாளர் மன்றம் (செந்நாய் பிரஸ் கிளப்) என முறையாகப் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டது.

The Chennai Press Club holds a distinguished place in the history of Indian journalism. As the oldest Press Club in Tamil Nadu, it traces its roots back to the post-Independence era, when the idea of an exclusive space for journalists first took shape in Madras—now Chennai.

The Club began its formal journey on May 2, 1972, when it was inaugurated as the Madras Press Club. The event was presided over by then Governor K. K. Shah, and formally inaugurated by then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. The Club’s first set of office bearers reflected the vibrant journalistic spirit of the time: Murasoli Maran, a journalist with Murasoli who later became a Union Minister, served as the first President. S. Vasudevan was the first Secretary-General, while M. P. Cherian and S. Viswanathan served as Joint Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

In the decades that followed, the Press Club evolved into a dynamic institution, with journalists from leading publications such as The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Mail, The Statesman, Makkal Kural, Dinamani, Dinamalar, and Industrial Economist serving as office bearers. Notably, veteran journalist Sam Rajappa, who later retired from The Statesman, was among its distinguished leaders. In 1980, Hemlata Anjaneyialu made history as the Club’s first woman President.

The Club has welcomed numerous eminent personalities over the years. Former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated its current building on April 14, 2009. Other prominent visitors have included:

Beyond hosting dignitaries, the Chennai Press Club has been a staunch defender of press freedom. In June 1983, it led a major protest against the Tamil Nadu Press Act, denouncing it as “obnoxious and unreasonably restrictive.”

On August 27, 1997, the Club was renamed and formally registered as the Chennai Patrikaiyalar Mandram (Chennai Press Club), reflecting its evolving identity.

However, after 1999, internal elections were paused for nearly 25 years. That long pause ended on December 15, 2024, when elections were successfully held under the supervision of retired Justice V. Bharathidasan of the Madras High Court. This landmark event was made possible by the efforts of a 12-member Special Guidance Committee. With the election of a new leadership, the Chennai Press Club has entered a revitalised chapter—reaffirming its commitment to the ideals and dreams of its founders.
